Pilot field works in the Lake of Kastoria

The Ministry of Environment and Energy has issued the permit for recording and estimating population size in the areas of Natura 2000 Network. More specifically, this permit concerns the actions that focus on the recording of aquatic (Otter – Lutra lutra) and semi-aquatic (American Mink – Neovison vison) mammalian footprint traces, in order to assess their population size, and on the other hand, to improve population size and conservation status of vulnerable wildlife species (Otter (Lutra lutra)) ) and birds.

The research will be carried out in the selected areas of the Natura 2000 network of Northern Greece, and more specifically in the SPA Lake Orestias (Kastoria) (GR1320003), SPA National Forest of Prespa (GR1340001), but also in the areas of, Kastoria, Florina, Grevena, Kozani, Imathia and Pella, with an implementation period from March 2020 to September 2022. The whole process will take place in a way that ensures the least possible disturbance to the species of wild fauna and its habitats.

According to the permit, the first pilot floating rafts were placed in order to record footprint traces.
